If you have a compaq, then chances are that you don’t have a standard motherboard. Motherboards that are sold singly adhere to a strict set of guidelines concerning placement of ports and placement of holes for screws. Motherboards that are made exclusively for a certain PC manufacturer do not have to adhere to these standards. So you can buy a motherboard that is comprable, but chances are that it will not physically fit inside the case. You could always buy a new motherboard that will accept your current processor and also buy a new case and transfer all the parts to the new case. It may look a little funny, but if you’re really budget conscious, it’s not a bad route. As for picking out the motherboard, go out to google and look up a program called CPU-Z. Once you have that downloaded, run it, and it will give you all kinds of info about your processor, motherboard, RAM, etc. Take this info into any reputable computer shop and see if they have what you need. You could try newegg.com,

we’re talking about motherboards… sure they are sometimes proprietary but that is not a big deal when it comes down to the main standards, atx, micro atx… you can replace that board w\ most any board of the same size to fit in the case…. the last motherboard swap i did, had a bad socket 478 mobo and it was cheaper to just use a 775 mobo i had lying around, and get a new cpu, and new cheaper/faster ddr2 ram.
