What is DMIF?
DMIF is a Session Level Protocol with support for Quality of Service (QOS) streams (i.e., multimedia content). DMIF hides the delivery technology details from the application in order to create a network independent multimedia delivery framework. DMIF ensures interoperability between the application space and the delivery layer through the DMIF-Application Interface (DAI) and interoperability among DMIF peers through the DMIF-Network Interface (DNI). Above the DAI, the application is media aware (e.g., MPEG-4) and delivery unaware. In other words, the application is designed based on the media technology independently of the network technology. Below the DAI, the DMIF layer is delivery aware (e.g., DSL) and media unaware. In other words, the media content is opaque to the delivery mechanism. DMIF provides a common API for an application to request transport channels suitable in quality appropriate to resolution and use. DMIF therefore performs a natural mapping function for an applicat
