What Is Electronic Records Management (ERM)?
Electronic records management (ERM) is the application of records management principles to electronic records. Many types of electronic records managed by electronic systems can be found throughout most organizations. These records may exist in the form of e-mail, text messaging, voicemail, word processing documents, spreadsheets, web content, or forms. They may be duplicated, changed, and forwarded or accessed outside the organization. While the paperless office is still conceptual in nature and practicality, the proliferation of electronic records created or adopted into an electronic system has accelerated and will continue to do so as businesses strategically strive to advance in tandem with technology. Today, most records in an organization are created by electronic means.
