What is Elgin Township Government?
Between County government and Municipalities, there is Elgin Township. This unit of government is charged with three basic functions: 1) general assistance for the indigent; 2) the assessment of real property for the basis of local taxation; 3) maintenance of all roads and bridges outside federal, state and other local jurisdiction. Why should you care? Township government directly influences our lives. -The Township Assessor influences our Property Taxes by evaluating our real property. -The Township Highway department maintains many of our roads. -The Township General Assistance Fund helps those who less fortunate with everything from food and clothing to utility bills and rent, a role particularly important in light of today’s economy.
