What is Entamoeba histolytica?
• The protozoa (germ) called Entamoeba histolytica is quite a rare cause of illness in this country but is a common cause of illness worldwide, especially in the tropics. • The symptoms of an Entamoeba infection vary from acute bloody diarrhoea with fever and chills, to mild abdominal discomfort with diarrhoea alternating with periods of constipation. • In a small number of cases other organs of the body apart from the gut may also be affected. • Some people who contract Entamoeba may develop no symptoms at all.
