On July 24, 2009 the US Department of Labor increased the minimum wage from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour. Even though the federal minimum wage is $7.25 some state have set there own minimum wage which is higher than the federal requirement. If you are a waitress or bartender then the minimum wage is $2.13 per hour with the remainder being made up by tips. If the difference is not made up by tips then the employer must cover the difference to bring the wages up to $7.25 per hour.
