What is functional strength or functional fitness?
The methods of workout commonly used with kettlebells yield different results than the ‘average’ trip to the gym. First, I use the terms functional strength and functional fitness interchangeably. Much of the fitness industry in the west, especially weight lifting, focuses the workout on various muscle groups and works them separately. I realize this is a gross generalization. In other words, we have been taught, mainly by the body building industry (thank you Arnold), that to weightlift means to isolate groups of muscles and work them by themselves. For the purposes of highlighting the differences in methods, let’s call how Americans think to lift weights ‘isolation’ training. In contrast, let’s grasp how functional strength training works out. Rather than separate muscle groups and work them in isolation, functional strength seeks to incorporate all the muscle groups necessary to perform big body movements.
