What is Gold-Plated, Gold-Filled, and Gold-Leaf?
Gold vermeille is gold (commonly electroplated) ontop of another metal. The most popular is gold vermeille, being gold plated ontop of sterling silver. However, gold vermeille will wear off because it is only a plating (example of this in jewellery components: http://www.stonesandfindings.com/Findings/metals/gold-vermeille/). Gold filled is gold casted or bonded onto another metal. commonly it’s gold casted onto brass. It very rarely wears off. Gold leaf is the filo-pastry of the craft world — it’s very very thin, and is applied using adhesive and a brush (and dusted off). If you were looking to purchase anything out of these three and you want it to last, I recommend Gold Filled.
Gold-Plated is metal with a very thin layer of gold applied to it that easily wears away. Gold-Filled is gold bonded to a base metal by electroplating. It is usually done to a layer of specific fineness. Gold Leaf is an extremely thin tissue of gold used for gilding. MyGoldEnvelope does not accept Gold-Plated, Gold-Filled, or Gold-Leaf pieces.
