Because the teacher estimates each student’s starting level based on performance outside the courseware, the initial estimate is only a rough approximation of the student’s appropriate level in the course. For this reason, Pearson has developed the Initial Placement Motion (IPM), an adaptive process that revises the student’s level in each strand of the course based on the student’s performance. The IPM process begins at the student’s first session. At the completion of distinct sets of exercises, an IPM decision occurs and the student’s level is adjusted by the system.
