What is Intermodal Route Type?
Intermodal means a continuous origin-destination movement utilizing more than one kind of transport. The most popular types of railroad intermodal services are for assembled automobiles, marine containers, and highway trailers. These include autorack, doublestack container, trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC), container-on-flatcar (COFC), and Roadrailer services. These services are often provided by premium trains using faster, more direct routes than other types of freight trains. For origin-destination combinations where intermodal trains use a different route than general merchandise trains, the intermodal route option will provide a more realistic route and mileage for intermodal than the “practical” (default) route option.
