What is international community doing to help clean up the oil spill off coast of Lebanon caused by Israeli bombing?
On 17 August, an international meeting of UN, regional and European Commission experts, organised by the UN’s International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), agreed a 50 million euros International Assistance Action Plan to help the Lebanese authorities tackle coastal oil pollution and prevent damage to neighbouring countries. The clean up operation, co-ordinated by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), is already underway. REMPEC is one of the UNEP’s Regional Activity centres and is administered by the IMO. The UK is a participating member. The European Commission’s Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) is also working alongside the IMO and UNEP. The Monitoring and Information Centre is the operational centre of the Community Mechanism for Civil Protection.
