What is InterNIC?
InterNIC is an independent organization responsible for holding the registration and routing of Internet domain names. Without them, it would be virtually impossible to keep track of domains on the Internet. Registration fee is $70 for the first two years and $35/year thereafter for your virtual domain name. InterNIC will send you an invoice via email after the domain is registered.
InterNIC (which stands for Internet Network Information Center) is the old name for a collection of three computer services companies. Originally contracted by the US National Science Foundation, InterNIC provided services relating to the registration of domains in the .COM, .NET, .ORG, and .EDU top-level domains. InterNIC was also responsible for the maintenance of the so-called ‘root zone name servers’ which form the foundation of the domain name system. In 1995 the National Science Foundation stopped funding InterNIC. By this time Network Solutions was the only company that hadn’t withdrawn from InterNIC. As a result, Network Solutions became the de facto registrar for .COM, .NET, and .ORG domains and manager of the root zone servers.
