What is Library Instruction?
A. Using online and in-class learning experiences, we tailor instruction sessions to meet your learning goals. Aside from helping students write research papers, we will create a session tailored to your assignment. Check out some of the possible sessions and activities used in other classes: • For a theater class, students researched historical, social, and political references from a play; • For a writing class, students annotated their bibliographies to evaluate their resources; • For an Institute class, students used primary sources to examine historical context.
Library instruction includes a range of resources and services aimed at assisting students, faculty, and staff in locating, assessing and using information for research and lifelong learning. CBU offers orientation sessions and library tours, instruction in the use of the library and its resources, one-on-one consultations, and faculty/staff training. Instructors often request sessions that combine demonstration of library materials use with hands-on searching, during which students find relevant material. Library instruction sessions may focus on a variety of topics related to research and information skills. You may work with the library instructor to design a session that will best meet your students’ needs and address the goals and objectives of your course.
Library Instruction (LI) sessions are offered to all members of the CVTC academic community. These instructional sessions are designed to promote information literacy across the curriculum. CVTC faculty and students are introduced to library and research skills vital to information access. Library users are taught to identify, access, evaluate, and utilize print and electronic resources to enhance the teaching and learning process. Additional information about Library resources is also available through brochures, guide sheets, and audiovisual or computerized tutorials. If you need more information about LI sessions, contact Kathy Goodman (715-833-6461 / kgoodman@cvtc.edu).
