What is LizardTech and where did the name come from?
In 1992, LizardTech was created as a spin-out of Los Alamos National Laboratory. Via the Federal Technology Transfer Acts, LizardTech was selected from a national bid as the exclusive commercialization vehicle for the MrSID image compression technology invented at LANL. Because we were a high-tech business located in Santa Fe, NM, we choose the name LizardTech. In 1996, LizardTech moved to Seattle in order to take advantage of all the support and become a major player in the image compression and decompression market.
