A dc machine is a rotating electrical machine that utilizes or produces direct current (dc). If power is supplied to the machine’s armature terminals and the shaft is connected to a mechanical load, the machine converts electrical power to mechanical power acting as a motor. If the shaft is turned by some outside force such as an engine and an electrical load is connected to the machine’s armature terminals, the machine converts mechanical power to electrical power acting as a generator. A fundamental theoretical dc machine can act as either a motor or generator depending on what is connected to the shaft and armature terminals. Real dc machines are sometimes provided with control systems that allow them to transition between motor and generator operation such as when used in electric vehicle to either drive the vehicle or provide braking. The same is true of ac machines.
