What is normal blood pressure for children?
Answer What is considered normal blood pressure in a child depends on three factors – gender, age and height. Boys and girls have different norms. “Normal” is different at different ages, and within each age grouping, the child’s height determines his or her normal blood pressure. Your child’s doctor can tell you what’s right for your child. High blood pressure in children is typically managed – as it is in adults – with lifestyle changes and, if your doctor directs, medication. Lifestyle changes include managing weight, eating a heart-healthy diet and getting regular physical activity. Children should also learn the dangers of tobacco use and be protected from secondhand smoke. Your child’s doctor will decide whether medication is needed. If your child is overweight, she has a higher risk of high blood pressure as well as other problems – including diabetes – than a child of healthy weight. If one or both parents have high blood pressure, your child is also at increased risk.
