What is offsetting?

Offsetting is an interim measure that corporations can use to mitigate activities that contribute to climate change, but are difficult to avoid, including air travel. With this in mind, Air Canada and Zerofootprint have developed an innovative offsetting program which allows you to calculate how much carbon dioxide (CO2) your company produces through air travel, and counterbalance these emissions by purchasing certified carbon credits. When you invest in offsetting, your organization is supporting a range of worthwhile environmental projects, all of which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by either capturing them (“sequestration”), or preventing their release through improved energy efficiency (“abatement”). You can choose to offset a portion of flights, or aim for the highest possible standard – “carbon neutrality” – which entails offsetting all emissions associated with your air travel, thereby mitigating this aspect of your corporation’s carbon footprint entirely.
