What is paraplegia?
Paraplegia is paralysis of the human body below the waist. Paraplegia may be caused by injury to the spinal cord at the T1 vertebrae or below, or by a spinal condition such as spina bifida that renders loss of function in the legs and pelvic region. Paraplegics, as a result, are confined to wheelchairs. While many paraplegics are able to function in society, prolonged physical inactivity may cause circulatory problems in the lower back and legs, leading to pressures sores, deep vein thrombosis, and lower back pain.
