Radiant heat is transmitted from a heat source via rays just like rays of sunlight. These rays pass through the air without heating it since only solid objects can absorb the heat they transmit. Dark colours absorb more radiant heat than lighter colours which reflect more of it. This is why light coloured clothing is cooler than dark coloured clothing. Radiant Heat is a safe and gentle heat that rises from the floor, transferring warmth directly to the body. It is considered the most comfortable form of heat. The typical home heating system relies upon convection (radiators) whereby air is heated via hot radiators, rises to the ceiling and then circulates around a room. Radiant Underfloor heating offers you the same comfort levels as convection systems while operating at 4-5F / 2-3C lower, because the larger heating surface means underfloor heating does not need to emit as much heat per square foot as a radiator, saving on fuel consumption and hence running costs.

Radiant heat is actually a very old technology that is used both indoors and outdoors. The Romans were among the first to build systems based on this premise by building special rooms over concrete slabs and brick ductwork. Hot air or steam from fires built beneath these structures circulated up through the system thereby radiating heat into the room above. The two most common types of under floor radiant heating systems are electric or hydronic (hot water). The electric system usually consists of a matt of heating elements placed under the floor while the hydronic system uses a series of tubes connected to a hot water boiler. Both systems produce heat that radiates upward into the room.
