What is Rainscreen Cladding
“Consideration of the functions required of an external wall has led to the concept of a wall with an inner structural leaf, insulated on its outer face, and a cladding assembly to protect the inner leaf from the effects of heavy wetting and solar radiation. Locating the insulating layer on the outer face of the inner leaf reduces thermal expansion and contraction of the building structure, avoids localised cold bridging around structural members, and reduces the risk of condensation on or within the inner structural leaf. The provision of an external rainscreen with an airspace which can be drained, back ventilated and, if required, pressure equalised also means that the main portion of the wall is not subjected to the deleterious effects of intermittent rain, and that the risk of through wall penetration is minimised.
