What is Satisfactory Academic Progress?
Satisfactory Academic Progress To receive Title IV student aid, the following definition of satisfactory academic progress must be met. Federal guidelines require that the Financial Aid Office measure progress with qualitative measurement (grade point average) and quantitative (length of time for completion). Only student enrolled in credit courses, seeking degrees/certificates, and in good standing can receive financial aid. Satisfactory academic progress must be checked in increments no longer than half the program or one academic year whichever is less. Satisfactory academic progress is also checked the first time the Tile IV aid is packaged each academic year. Federal regulations require that students receiving financial aid maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress to be eligible to receive financial aid each year. This requirement not only measures cumulative GPA, but also the percent of attempted hours passed. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA each semester and each academic year in order to receive federal aid. In addition, they also must complete 67% of the courses they attempt each semester in order to receive federal financial aid. (A student can get a 4.0 in 2 classes, but get 2 W’s and still be on academic progress.) Finally, there are maximum timeframes that students have to receive federal aid. Students get 1.5 times the length of their program to use aid. A student in a 2-year program has 3 full-time years to receive financial aid. If a student is SAP, it is likely for one of the above reasons. You must file a SAP appeal form to ask if your aid can be reinstated.
To receive federal and state financial aid, you must actively pursue your courses. Active pursuit means regular classroom attendance, handing in assignments, and taking tests and quizzes. At Kishwaukee College, you must successfully complete 66% of all courses you attempt. A successful completion is a grade of A, B, C, D, or P. An unsuccessful completion is a grade of F, I, NC, or W.
