What is service-learning or community-based learning?
According to Campus Compact, a national higher education advocacy organization, “service-learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility.” Service-learning (also called community-based learning) has been incorporated into courses throughout Portland State University and the Division of Public Administration. Through these courses, students gain valuable experience and make connections with community organizations.
