Sharecropping is a term that describes a landlord-tenant relationship in which the crop and crop inputs are shared in a proportion between the landlord and the tenant. Currently, a significant portion of farmland is rented and involves a landlord-tenant relationship, either in a crop-share arrangement or in a cash rent arrangement. Often, the tenant is a farmer who has a sizable land base of owned land and chooses to add to the size of the operation by renting additional land. Crop-share arrangements generally split the crop and the crop inputs in a fixed proportion between the landlord and the tenant. As a foundation, the landlord provides the land to the operation as well as some management while the tenant provides machinery, labor, and management. By comparing the value of the land with the value of the machinery, labor, and management, one can determine the approximate share of the total investment made by each individual.
