What is sweet itch in horses?
My mare has sweet itch. Sweet itch is basically when the little midges bites the horse, and the body reacts to the bite, this causes the skin to go and it itches. It will affect them by making them want to itch. Riding them may change if they have it very badly. At the mo. my horse has a full fly rug on, and we put sud-a-crem on all the sores as a barrier cream(you can also use vaseline) and she gets sponged over with diluted dettol. However there are special washes and treatments from the vets you can get, yet sweet itch can come from various different midges, therefore what works for one may not work for another. Treatment can cost the amount of dettol and vaseline, sud-a-crem and i think the wash costs around £10, but treatment costs from vets will vary. unfortunately at the mo. there is no 100% cure.
