What is “Temporary Protected Status?
Similar to political asylum is a category known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS. The big difference here is that it’s not permanent. It provides for temporary relief or safety to affected individuals. A TPS designation lasts for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 18 months. The Secretary of Homeland Security may review, extend or eliminate TPS designations as according to law. If your TPS application is approved, you may apply for and receive work authorization.
