WHAT IS THE ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY (AVO)?
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is a cooperative organization that monitors Alaska’s hazardous volcanoes in support of public safety and conducts fundamental volcanologic research. AVO is also the principal organization responsible for volcanic hazards assessment and eruption notification and monitoring in Alaska. Geological Survey The University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Geophysical Institute The Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys AVO’s monitoring efforts presently focus on volcanoes in the Cook Inlet region, Alaska’s most populous area and a major international air transportation hub. As part of this monitoring program, AVO maintains a real-time seismic network at Spurr and three other Alaskan volcanoes (Brantley, 1990; Wright and Pierson, 1992).
