What is the audio buffer length and how should I change it?

The audio buffer length is the amount of time voice data is held before being processed. There are two buffers: the buffer used to hold your voice data before sending it to the other person, and the buffer used to hold data from the other person before playing it back on your speakers. If your audio buffer is 0 (and so is the other person’s), that means that there is no data stored, and any slight disruption will cause hiccups or dropouts in the voice conversation; but the conversation will be in real-time. If your audio buffer is 500 (and so is the other person’s), that means a full half-second of data will be stored on each side, and so there will be a full one second of lag added between the time you speak and the other person hears you. The advantage to a long buffer is that slight pauses in network traffic won’t cause dropouts or hiccups in the conversation. Generally, once you find a good setting for your connection, you won’t need to adjust it for each person you talk to. Broadb
