What is the best breed of dog for pig hunting?
When my brothers went hunting they used mutts. Really tough mutts. Maybe Pit/Shepard mix and Ridgeback/shepard mix. Look for a dog (or breed) that is lightning fast in small quarters as well as over flat or hilly ground, has a real high prey drive, tenacious, and can be trained extensively – wants to please, too. I’d say a somewhat lean but muscular athlete – medium hair or coat to guard against the underbrush. A bully breed might do it if it was something with longer legs like an American Bulldog. But I’m just going by build. I don’t know the temperament of that breed. Definitely get a dog that is a hunting dog. Use three dogs. They’ll work better together and be safer. I agree with James that the Dane is not a good choice now days. I have a Dane. When she sees a boar from our car she just looks and shows little interest. She is also too clumsy and not agile in sharp turns. A boar would tear her up.
