What is the best fertilizer for the rose of sharon?
Answer Hi Willene, The Rose of Sharon or Althaea (hibiscus syriacus) is one of my favorite deciduous shrubs. You can move this plant easily during winter months. Wait until cold weather sets in and prune the plant to about half its height before attempting to move it. I know this is alot of pruning, but it will make moving the plant easier and it will help the plant recover when it tries to ‘green up’ in the spring. Make sure you use a very sharp shovel to cut the roots and use an old sheet or something to wrap the ball so you can move it. Don’t let the roots dry out too long before replanting. Dig a nice, wide hole and plant the Rose of Sharon a few inches deeper (2-3) than it was before the move. Water well to settle the plant. As far as pruning, I would cut out some of the central branches and thin the plant as well as removing about half the height. As far as the plant dropping its leaves in August, I know you had some wet weather in September, but I wonder if it was too dry this p
