What is the best way to travel with a bicycle?

Afterwards, I requested advice from the elist as to the best way to travel with a bicycle. This article summarizes much of what I learned: Assume that all airlines will accept a hard-sided bicycle case as oversized baggage. As an example of complications in the airline industry, Delta Airlines will not accept baggage with a total dimension (length + width + height) greater than 80 inches. The ACTC Performance Hard Sided Case measures 96 inches, well over the limit. The Delta web page says they will accept cardboard or canvas sided bike cases; it says nothing about hard-sided cases.
