What is the Board of Trustees?
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Association. It consists of the following officers: President, Executive Vice President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, a representative of the Advisory Council, Immediate Past President and one Trustee from each of the geographic regions: Gulf Coast, Central, West, North and South Texas.
The MTD’s Board of Trustees governs District activities. There are seven members on the Board of Trustees; the University of Illinois is also represented by an administrator and a student as non-voting Board members. MTD Board members are appointed by elected officials on the Champaign County Board, and Board members serve a maximum of two five-year terms.
The Board of Trustees is the constitutional governing body responsible for policy and financial oversight of the eight public institutions of higher learning. The Board first assumed its duties in 1944. Because of changes to legislation regarding the appointment of Board members, “after January 1, 2004, as vacancies occur, the twelve-member Board. . .shall be appointed from each of the three Mississippi Supreme Court districts until there are four members from each Supreme Court district. The terms of office are reduced from12 years to nine years. The terms are staggered so that all members appointed after 2012 will have a term of nine years.” The Commissioner of Higher Education is appointed by the Board and is responsible for administering the Board’s policies at the eight universities in the state of Mississippi.
