What is the cause of muscle injury?
The “prime directive” of muscle is to contract. It is really its only job. Without contraction of muscles we cannot move. When the muscle becomes injured by trauma, sports injury, or overuse it over-contracts, becoming shortened and compressing its own blood and nerve supply causing further contraction and pain. In fact muscles are the biggest pain generators in the human body. Once the muscle contracts in this way, it is reluctant to release of its own accord. This leads to chronic or repeated pain symptoms (e.g., headaches that occur 5 times a month or a back often goes out when doing a particular activity).
