What is the classification system?
For a more organized protection and identification, goods and services are placed in different “Classes” according to the International (Nice) Classification of Goods and Services for the purpose of Registration of Marks. Many countries today adopt this system of classification. The idea behind the classification is to provide only a limited monopoly over the marks by restricting the protection to a particular class of goods/services. In many countries a separate application has to be filed for each class in which the applicant wishes to register the mark. But the trend of the modern trademark system is to allow for “multi-class” applications, so that a single application can be filed to cover goods/services in more than one International Class.
