What is the computing grid?
The computing grid is a technology that allows us to deliver utility computing. We define utility as the ability to use only what you need when you need it, and pay only for what you use. If you want to create a utility, there are two characteristics that you must have. First, what you deliver has to be standard and transparent to the customer. People need to know what they’re going to get, and get as much as they need when they need it. Second, you’ve got to aggregate the resource to get economies of scale that will drive cost efficiencies. Other utilities offered today are really just fancy financing options. They’re like a car lease where your payments fluctuate with the number of miles you travel per month. This method of financing does allow you to avoid upfront capital expenditure, but most of these deals require custom contracts that lock you in for years, eliminating your ability to dial up and dial down that computing environment.
