What Is the Course of Hyperthyroidism?
Thyroid hormones stimulates the body, when there is an excess production of thyroid hormones it produces a state of hypermetabolism during which the functions of many organ systems are increased. This causes a general increase stimulation of the nervous and muscular systems, the heart and other vital organ systems. When this happens, the body must compensate. The blood output of the heart, general blood flow, body temperature, and respiration rate increase. Hyperthyroidism also affects blood sugar levels, blood cholesterol, blood fats and the production of insulin from the pancreas gland. Hyperthyroidism decreases fat production and the body’s ability to utilize carbohydrates. It increases vitamin metabolism. Increases bone mobilization and increase release of calcium in the blood. Ultimately it increases release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH – the stress hormone) and melanocyte-stimulating hormone.
