What is the difference bettween situational irony and verbal irony for english class?

Irony is when there’s a conflict between what is said (or done) and what was intended. Verbal Irony – Can be used as humor, sarcasm or for shear effect. If I’m down with the Swine Flu and someone asks how I am I can say, “Oh, wonderful. Just wonderful, thank you for asking.” That would be irony because I stated the opposite of what I really meant (although my meaning was clear). Situational Irony – Where irony is played out in circumstances. True story: In the Philippines during WW2 a group of US soldiers was trapped on a hilltop. They were running short on ammo and food – much nervousness and a growing sense of doom. Finally the sound of a US cargo plane is heard. Everyone’s excited. Salvation! Food! Escape! An airdrop is performed and several soldiers are killed by falling crates of food. That would be situational irony – where the very food seen as salvation ends up killing you violently.
