What is the difference between a complete sentence and a fragment (an incomplete sentence)?
A sentence must have a subject and a verb, and must make a complete idea. For example: “I went to the store.” I is the subject, went is the verb, and I have gotten a point accross, so an idea has been fully portrayed. A sentence can be as little as one word. For example, if you hit me and I said “Stop!” that would be a sentence. The verb is stop. SINCE IT IS A COMMAND, THE SUBJECT IS UNDERSTOOD AS “YOU”. So really I’m saying “(you) Stop! In the right context, this would express a good enough idea for it to make sense. Sometimes a so called “sentence” cold be a fragment even if it did have a subject and a verb but did not express a full idea. For example: “I went.” That is a fragment. We have no idea where you went.
