What is the difference between a cross over and straight through Ethernet cable?

Ethernet or CAT5 cables can be either straight through or crossed, the difference is different pins are used for the transmit and receive at each end. On Ethernet hubs the ports are crossed so you only need a straight through cable, however NIC’s in PC’s and on routers are generally not crossed, so if you are connecting from a PC to another PC or to a router, you will generally need a cross over cable (There are exceptions as some routers are pre crossed).
