What is the difference between a degree in divinity, biblical studies and theology?
From my layman studies of the bible, history, and church doctrine, I would think that the primary difference between a masters degree in divinity and a masters degree of theology would be the the scope of knowledge and understanding not only of scripture but, also its history, influence, and development in terms of spiritual (as well as social) governance, political and legal hegemony, and resolution of differences between denominations. The master of divinity would qualify as one who can minister the Word and the master of theology would qualify as one who can teach the Word. Again, I can only speculate since I have neither a masters in divinity or a masters in theology. However, it seems reasonable that a master of theology would outrank a master of divinity since I know of at least one seminary that requires a candidate for a masters in theology to already have a masters in divinity.- John (Alpharetta, GA)
