What is the difference between an “Appointed Person” and a First Aider and do I require both?
An ‘Appointed Person’ is an individual nominated by their employer to take charge when someone is injured or falls ill. Their responsibilities include looking after the first aid equipment, eg. restocking the first aid box and calling an ambulance. Appointed persons should not administer first aid unless trained to do so. A first aider is someone who has undergone a training course in administering first aid and holds a current first aid at work certificate (these are time-limited to three years). A first aider can undertake the duties of an appointed person. Ref: Standard 9.
