‘Deferral’ postpones your jury service. You may have a problem that makes it difficult for you to attend on the date you have been summoned but you would be able to attend on a date within the next 12 months. In this case you may ask the Jury Central Summoning Bureau to postpone (defer) your service. If you are deferred you will be given a new date to attend that is convenient to you within the next 12 months. Jury service may only be deferred once. ‘Excusal’ excuses you from jury service on this occasion. If you have a problem that makes it difficult for you to attend for jury service at any time within the next 12 months you may ask the Jury Central Summoning Bureau to excuse you from jury service this time around. You will only be excused if the Jury Central Summoning Bureau is satisfied that it is not reasonable to expect you to do jury service during the next year.
