What is the Difference between RAM and Cache memory?

0

Cache memory is made of high speed SRAM and sits between the processor and RAM. It stores most commonly used information by all programs. The processor can access information from it faster than from the RAM, improving the system performance. While RAM is physically present on the motherboard, cache comes in two kinds. L1 cache comes on processor whereas L2 cache is present on the motherboard. Most of the newer processor have integrated L2 with L1 on the processor. As this is an expensive memory, it is used in low amounts – Celerons and PIIs have 128 KB cache while PIIIs have 256-512 KB. What is the RAM made up of? Just like processor, both SRAM and DRAM chips contain highly-integrated transistor patterns photo etched into silicon. SRAM’s have four to six transistors per bit, whereas DRAMs have only one and a capacitor. Since the capacitor can’t hold the charge for long, DRAMs require refresh circuitry. A RAM module plugs into a SIMM (single inline memory module) slot on the motherboar
