What is the difference between the English Language Program (ELP) and the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program?

Yeah, you’re right. If you need the language, let’s say, for life and everyday communication, that’s elp. If it’s for studying, to write essays well and handle academic work, to feel comfortable even in complex lectures and seminars with professional terminology and so on, then it’s eap. If your level is a bit weak, you can start with elp and then move on to eap. I’m just learning English by attending online english classes for adults. Just English for life, I mean. I guess that could be called elp? I like that it’s free. I can’t afford paid courses right now, and even the free course from sqa education includes 8 weeks with good teachers.
I’m guessing it’s just that they’re different programs, right? Like for different goals, with different levels of immersion in the language, and different focus on different skills.
The University of Calgary has two options for learning English: • The English Language Program (ELP) in Continuing Education is a non-credit ESL (English as a Second Language) program focusing on communicative English in an academic and professional environment. Each ELP program is made up of separate courses in speaking and listening, reading and writing and grammar. The Semester application and tuition fees ($3450) include instruction, materials/textbooks, and international health insurance. • The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program also focuses on academic English. Successful completion of the EAP Program satisfies the English language proficiency requirement for certain degree programs only at the University of Calgary. The EAP application and tuition fees (approx.$5100) do not include student fees, books or supplies.
