What is the history behind Pygmy Goats?
The Pygmy Goat was originally called the Cameroon Dwarf Goat. The Pygmy Goat first came from the former French Cameroon Area of the West Coast of Africa. The Pygmy Goat was brought to the United States in 1959 by Heinz Ruhe. By the 1970’s interest in the Pygmy Goat began to grow to the point that registries for the Pygmy Goats were established to define breed type. In 1975 the incorporated National Pygmy Goat Association was formed. Selecting Your Pygmy Goat If you are interested in breeding and raising goats for show, purchase registered goats. If your main interest is having a goat for a pet you many want to buy a wether (castrated male), as they are less expensive than registered does (females). Bucks are not considered suitable as pets and should be purchased as a breeding animal. You should start with a kid (baby goat) that is 8-12 weeks old. You need to get acquainted and become friends with your goat. If you are looking for a breeder, contact the National Pygmy Goat Association
