What is the I-580 Freeway Extension Project area?
The I-580 Freeway Extension Project will extend Interstate 580 (I-580) from the Mt. Rose Highway to the Bowers Mansion cutoff. The current connection between these points is provided by US 395, an at-grade facility through Steamboat Hills, Pleasant Valley, and Washoe City. US 395 does not meet current freeway standards. This project is called an “extension project” because NDOT is extending the improvements it has already made to I-580 that currently ends at the Mt. Rose Interchange. The I-580 freeway extension will construct the new freeway west of US 395 for 8.5 miles until it intersects with US 395 at the north end of Carson City. Once it leaves the Mt. Rose interchange, it travels through the hills to Washoe City and joins with the existing freeway at the Bowers Mansion cutoff. This project will complete I-580 in Washoe County. NDOT plans to eventually improve I-580 to freeway standards, throughout Nevada. To view this project’s 8.5-mile alignment, check out our interactive map or
