What is the insulating value of a standard size Panel?
A Winter Panel polyurethane SIP panel in a standard 4.5″ thickness has a rating of R-28. This is the highest insulating value per given thickness. In comparison to the same size panel manufactured with an expandable polystyrene core, a polyurethane core offers a 40% higher value than the R-20 rated EPS panel. It’s also important to understand that the solid core construction of SIPs prevents air infiltration, which is the largest factor behind energy loss. How are the Structural Insulated Panels manufactured? Polyurethane is what is known as a pour-in-place foam. The structural skins are transferred along a specially designed conveyor system while the polyurethane foam, under precise control, is poured in to the cavity space between the two skins. The polyurethane then cures and bonds to the skin, producing a solid one- piece structural panel. With expanded polystyrene panels, the EPS core is molded off-line and then cut to size. The core is then bonded to the two skins. Panels that re
