What is the Mathematical Olympiad?
Mathematical Olympiad was originated in 1978-79 as an extracurricular project for students and teachers in the elementary schools of Valley Stream, New York. The project was designed by the director of mathematics to foster the pursuit of individual excellence in problem solving while enhancing creativity and resourcefulness ideas akin to those of the ancient Olympic Games. The goals of the Math Olympiad for children were: 1. To develop their enthusiasm for problem solving; 2. To contribute to their cognitive development; and 3. To provide the initial foundation for an intellectually stimulating and pleasurable mental activity. The contest has expanded to include many schools across America and involves taking five exams during the year. Awards for participation and/or performance are presented to all team members at the end of the year.
