0

The new Regulator is expected to be established and fully operational by 3 January 2001. The objective will be to ensure human safety and environmental protection while allowing for innovation and the benefits of gene technology for the Australian community and industry, through timely, science based and consistent regulation which takes account of ethical concerns. The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator will: • Regulate all aspects of the development, production and use of genetically modified organisms and their products, where no other existing regulatory body has responsibility, in accordance with principles agreed and enacted by all jurisdictions; and • Work with other regulatory bodies to ensure the consistent application of standards and harmonise assessments across all systems of regulation. The new Regulator will deliver increased assurances to the public about the maintenance of high standards of health and environmental protection, and streamlined approval processes wit
