What is the objective of the Schengen Convention?
The Schengen Convention entails the abolition of controls at the internal borders of the signatory States of the EU, while strengthening checks at the EU’s external frontiers, where immigration and other frontier control measures are carried out in accordance with a single set of rules. A set of common rules defines the conditions for entry into the Schengen area, including the types of visa and travel documents needed, and how controls at external borders have to be carried out. As the convention creates an area of free movement without internal controls, the set of entry rules mentioned above is designed to take into account not only the concerns of those EU Member States with an external frontier, but also the interests of all the States that have signed up to the Schengen Agreement.
