What is the precipitate formed?
I will try my best to narrow down options, but I do not know what mummion is, let alone what is in it, so I cannot give a definitive answer. The main test is for Halide ions, i.e. formed from the Halogens, with the silver nitrate. The Nitric acid is to get rid of any other ions that would give the same result as a Halide, without adding Halides, as hydrochloric acid would. If fluorides are present silver fluoride (AgF) will be formed, but as this is soluble, you will still see a clear solution, i.e. no precipitate, which could just be a negative result. Chlorides would form a white precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl) . Bromides would form a cream precipitate of silver bromide (AgBr). Finally, Iodides would form a yellow precipitate of silver bromide (AgI). These three precipitates are difficult to distinguish unless you have them all lined up, so we use ammonia to try to redissolve them.
